Swapping your child's device
How to move a child from one phone or tablet to another without losing their tasks, XP, flashcards, or history — including what happens on the old device.

Kids outgrow phones, break them, upgrade them, or borrow a sibling's for the afternoon. When that happens you don't have to delete and re-add the child — the Parents app has a Swap Devices flow that atomically moves the child from the old device to the new one. Their tasks, XP, streaks, flashcards, and history all come with them; the old device signs them out on its own.
How to swap
Open the Myzo Parents app and tap the child's card on the dashboard. Go to their Settings and, under Device Access, tap Swap Devices. A fresh QR code appears on your screen.
On the new device, open the Myzo Kids app and scan the QR code, then have your child enter their PIN. That's it — the new device is now the paired device.
What happens on the old device
When the new device pairs, our servers atomically retire the old device's session and issue a fresh one to the new device. The old device is force-signed-out the moment it notices — the Kids app drops the session and jumps straight to the Welcome screen, without waiting for the app to be closed and reopened. If the app is in the foreground when the swap happens, you'll see it flip to Welcome within a couple of seconds; if it's in the background it flips as soon as it comes forward.
No account data remains readable on the old device after that check runs.
If the old device is fully powered off when you swap, nothing happens on it until someone opens the Kids app again — at which point it does the same server check, sees the session is retired, and drops back to the Welcome screen. There is no window in which both devices are simultaneously usable.
What your child sees on the new device
Your child scans the QR, taps their PIN, and lands on their normal Today screen with everything intact — same tasks, same XP total, same streak day, same flashcard sets, same achievements. Nothing resets and nothing has to re-sync from scratch.
Handing an old phone down to a sibling
If the "old" device is going to a different child (an older sibling passes their old phone down to a younger sibling), you don't need to do the swap on the older sibling's card. Instead, on the new child's card in the Parents app tap Pair a device and generate a normal setup QR for that child.
On the phone itself, have the younger sibling open the Kids app, tap Start now! on the welcome screen, and either scan the code you generated or continue and scan the code from your Parents app during their onboarding. When the new child taps Start now!, the Kids app clears everything the older sibling had stored locally on that device — session, name, grade, cached data, first-run flags — before it writes anything for the new child, so the older sibling's information is not exposed on the device after the hand-off.
The older sibling's data on our servers is untouched by that on-device reset. If you want the older sibling's account to stop existing too, remove them from your family separately — see Removing a child.
Common questions
Do I need to sign the old device out first? No. The swap handles it. If you sign the old device out manually before generating the new QR, that's fine too — either order works.
What if my child's PIN doesn't work on the new device? The PIN is the same one they set originally; it comes with the account, not the device. If it isn't working, double-check the child card in the Parents app to confirm the swap completed (the device row should show the new device's model). If it did and the PIN still fails, reset the PIN from the child's Settings.
Do I lose anything by swapping? No. Tasks, XP, streaks, flashcards, achievements, grades, and reward history all live in the family account, not on the device. The swap only moves which device is authorized to sign in as that child.
How is this different from removing the child and adding them back? Removing a child kicks off a 7-day recovery window and — if you don't restore — permanently deletes all their data. Swapping preserves everything and only rotates which device is paired. Use Swap Devices when the child is staying and the phone is changing; use Remove when the child is leaving the account entirely.
Can I have my child on two devices at once (phone and tablet)? Not today. Each Child User is paired to exactly one device at a time. If they need their account on a different device for the afternoon, use Swap Devices to move them, then swap back afterward.
